Mtawali Objects to Mamelodi Sundowns’ Signings
Four new players have recently joined the ranks of the Mamelodi Sundowns, much to the befuddlement of a former player.
Over the course of the Premier Soccer League’s January transfer window, the reigning champions acquired the services of Zuko Mdunyelwa, Matias Esquivel, Tashreeq Matthews and Thembinkosi Lorch.
While others may deem these signings positively, former Sundowns midfielder Ernest Mtawali is not sure that this is the case.
“If you look at the squad that Sundowns have, you can see that they didn’t need to sign any new players,” the 57-year-old remarked in an interview with a local soccer outlet on Sunday, 4 February.
He then questioned the club’s decision-making: “I am just wondering whether they are just signing for the sake of signing, or if they want to reinforce the team. How do you reinforce an already strong team which is already doing well?”
Mtawali concluded: “If one team has 11 players at a big tournament like [the African Cup of Nations], then that team has a quality squad. I don’t understand why you would want to beef up such a squad at this point. Seriously, I don’t know if there was a need to sign these four players in January. Not just one, but all of them.”
